Summer Learning
Avoid the "Summer Slide" by supporting your learner this summer, so they're ready in August!
1. Become a Reading Rockstar (30 minutes every day! ) Reading is like magic for our brains! Just 30 minutes of reading every single day helps our kids stay sharp and learn new things without even trying too hard!
-
Sora to the Rescue! Did you know all OUSD kids can use a super cool app called Sora? It's like a library right on your phone or tablet with tons of ebooks and audiobooks from our school and the Oakland Public Library!
2. Writing Superpowers Activate! (10 minutes, 3 times a week! ✍️) Let's get those writing muscles moving for just 10 minutes, three days each week. They can write about anything:
-
Their coolest summer adventures!
-
A fun message to grandma and grandpa!
-
Even try to convince you why they need an extra scoop of ice cream! 😉
-
For kids in grades 4-8: They can also become grammar gurus on Quill.org for just 10 minutes a day!
3. Math Adventures Await! (10 minutes, 3 times a week! ➕➖✖️➗) Let's keep those amazing math skills strong with just 10 minutes of fun math practice, three days a week.
- Check out cool math websites like Math Playground!
-
For kids in grades 3-5: Don't forget about iReady! It's like a game and math practice all in one!
4. Typing Ninjas Unite! (Practice daily if you're up for it! ⌨️) For families who want an extra challenge, practicing typing every day is super helpful! Lots of tests are on the computer now, and even in 3rd grade, kids start typing their stories. Being a good typer is a real superpower! They can practice on Typing Club.
How to Get to the Cool Apps (Clever Login!):
Your kids can get into Sora, iReady, and Typing Club using something called Clever. It uses their school username and password.
-
For 2nd graders and up: They already know their logins!
-
For Kinder and 1st graders: You'll need to help them with their username and password (they use a QR code at school).
-
You can find their student usernames and passwords in AERIES. Look for Student Data then District Supplemental. You should see Student Email (username) and Password. NOTE: Elementary students don't have access to email.
That's all it takes – about 40 minutes a day to help your child zoom into the next school year feeling smart and confident!
